Hi All
Thanks for your response to my email, the advice is very helpful and I am going to to pursue a number of lines now. I am down loading Ubuntu 9.4 and will also down load the 64 bit version. I read today on the Ubuntu Hard Ware compatibility site that ASUS P5QL PRO mother boards do seem to have a HD driver problem but that there may be ways round it. So if not too technical I could have a go. As for installing from the command line That might be a step too far until I can learn more about how to do it or if it comes with a idiot guide.
Will keep you informed of my progress as I make any!
Thanks again
Richard

Just wanted to echo everyone else in saying welcome to the group Richard, nice to have you aboard. I'm sure we will be able to help with most problems you might have transferring to Linux. Your problem with installing Ubuntu and Mint is a strange one but as both distributions are based on Debian, I wonder if it's something you would get with all Debian-based distros. I've heard similar stories with some hardware in the past.
Hopefully the new Ubuntu release might help you out with more hardware support. It would seem to be some problem with the motherboard and the hard disk controllers not being supported to me but I'm not a hardware guru, that's just a hunch. You could try the alternative installer CD or even the 64 bit versions of Ubuntu. The alternative install is aimed at people with these sorts of hardware problems I think.

Let us know how you get on and I'm sure we can get it working somehow. Best of luck!

Welcome Richard! Thanks for joining.
There's a good lot of tutorials out there, varying in quality and
quantity it has to be said, but generally GIYF!
I think our members have experience in various areas and to various
levels, we've a couple with audio/video interests so they should just
about cobble some sense together (:
It's a shame you can't make Thursdays but paths may cross at some point!

Further to Paul's point, have you tried other non-Deb/Ubu-ish distros?
Just caught my eye that Suse was okay and I've never had hardware
troubles with Fedora though my setup is far from esoteric!
