OK I have Debian 3.1 loaded it goes as far as the login prompt but then it
will not go any further.
Startx will not work, it says command not found.
Fintan suggested I try the following:

type in su (superuser)
then type

apt-get update

let it install what ever
then type

base-config

Base config will prompt you to install packages -- simply check off
(use your arrows and spacebar) Desktop, hit enter and go get a
sandwich.

You will be prompted during the install -- pretty simple stuff - just
read it and make your decisions. When this process is complete you
have KDE and Gnome.

However in practice it won't load any of the software. It goes through the
motions but nothing actually gets uploaded. So no graphical desktop, I am
stuck in command line. I can't think what the problem might be and the
software isn't giving me any clues.
It's an Inno 128Mb graphics card with the GeForce FX5200 chipset it's hardly
a rare card.
I have a driver CD for it that runs in Windows but don't know how to get
that into Linux!
This thing is about as user friendly as a barbed wire cushion :-)
