In theory you should be able to set up a VPN pass through in the router
setup page.
 I can't say how exactly cos I don't know what router you have but some of
them you just look for a box called VPN pass through and configure an open
port there.
 At the remote end you tell the VPN setup to look for that port at that IP.
 That should put a signal on your LAN which ought to spark the machine into
life.
 You don't say what Op Sys you have but it should be possible to set it to
"hibernate after x mins" which ought to close it down after you have
finished using it.
 Notice I say "ought".
 The one thing I know about these bloody systems is they never work as they
are supposed to.
