Grab yourself a copy of single-CD Knoppix and boot from it.
Switch to tty1 [Ctl/Alt/F1] and copy down all the info you find there on
your system, cards, etc. (This is always useful stuff to have around.)

Whilst you're at it, grab a copy (onto floppy) of the
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file it has auto-magically produced for your
machine. [Hmmm. If you're unsure how to format a floppy under Linux, use
the microshit commands: 'mformat a:' then use 'mcopy' a la MS.]

Exit Knoppix; re-boot debian.

Rename your current /etc/X11/XFConfig86-4 to something safe [e.g. stick
.orig on the end]; and replace with the XF86Config file Knoppix built for
your machine using its own brilliant auto-suss software.

If you've done the above, you've just solved this problem!
Pressing Ctl/Alt/F7 should demonstrate this.

Cheers,
