Well that just proves my inexperience in mepis.

But being a Debian spinoff, you're bound to get better results with a .deb.  
With apt-get. I think there might be incompatibilities with installing rpms  
(since debs use debian file structure and handy stuff like  
update-alternatives and the run-all-in-directory tool).
