This link below shows you how to talk RS232 using a usb port. You will 
need an adaptor cable.

You can also get USB to RS485 cables.

Let me know the details of the device you have. Is this the display you 
were talking about at the last meeting? I know some people who program 
this sort of stuff. They may have heard of it.
