Why don't you just compile a kernel without framebuffer supprt?

Don't know aabout faced and overcme, but I have a machine running kernel
2.4.2, with XFree 4.0.3 and a G450. Works perfectly - uses DRI to play
Quake quite nicely too. I was annoyed that you need a binary only lib
from Matrox to get the DRI working, but that was the only irritation.
