Dear LUG person,
I am working for an NGO (& NPO) called Community Technology.
We recycle computers which are donated to us from various sources, as and
when they upgrade their own systems.
These businesses/organisations would otherwise literally 'skip' the
computers, as the costs involved in recycling such poisonous materials is
tremendous.
Any broken parts or 'antique' parts that can no longer be used, we separate
into plastic/metal/mobo bins and recycle them, in accordance with the
Environmental Protection Act (1992).
Comtech, as an organisation, can be divided into 4 parts. 'IT Aid' assists
campaigns/charities and community groups with hardware/software/computer
usage support, both locally and to some extent internationally. 'Comtech
Computers' refurbishes and recycles and maintains, primarily for retail.
Research & Media Monitoring does basically what it says on the label. The
Education & Skills department is where the training happens, from DTP to
Internet Security (a little bit of Linux used here).
'Comtech Computers' and the 'Education & Skills' departments finance our free
pick-up service and rent, through training and reselling some of the
refurbished systems we may reap.
In addition to those computers that we resell, we also end up with a great
deal of lower end systems (386 & 486s) which we'd love to be able to use
rather than break apart for scrap. 'Beowolf Cluster' springs to mind at this
juncture!
As a Linux 'newbie' I'd love to learn more, and I believe Linux could well be
the way forward for us, as a charitable educational establishment, and for
all NGOs in the future, if only for the huge costs to M$ Software, let alone
the community spirit involved with both Charitable philosophy and Linux
philosophy.
I was wondering if any one of your 'reps' would like to come down and visit
us, to see our layout, find out more about us, and perhaps try and work on
getting together as a Linux Education Network.
