Hi,
I apologise for the length of this post, but it is Linux related and may lead
to others avoiding similar problems in the future.
I think I have made an error.
X was working O.K. before I did this...
I left a bootable cdrom in a DVD drive, whilst experimenting writing onto a
CD-R drive. I had then more or less forgotten about these. Then I left a
floppy in the floppy drive. Then I shutdown and restarted my RedHat 7.1 based
workstation/server. This lead to the "Booting from removable media. This is not
a bootable disk. Please insert a bootable floppy and press any key to try to
continue " message. I took out the floppy disk, but forgot about the Mandrake
7.2 disk in the DVD drive. On pressing the spacebar key the Mandrake 7.2 cdrom
was activated. Once the install screen came up I attempted to cancel, but the
program would not allow this. I therefore switched off the server using the
boot switch on the front of the CPU. Then I rebooted the computer and made sure
to remove the Mandrake cdrom. I then got error messages advising me to log in
as root to do repairs, or press contol-D for normal startup.
I ran a fsck, and agreed to all the suggested
repairs. The system now boots as before with OK messages until the login
prompt, where I can login as a user or as root.
If I type "df" I get the following output:-

When I try to get to my Gnome desktop, by typing "startx", whether logged in
as a user or root I get the message:-

This workstation was recently purchased from DNUK.
Any ideas on how to proceed in order to get X running again would be
welcomed.
On shutting the computer down I now get [FAILED]
messages for shutting down xfs. I don't know if this is significant.
If anybody can explain what may have happened in laymans terms I would be
grateful. I have sent this log file off to xfree86.org
