Nonsense. I'm connecting to Demon by exactly that method; in fact, it is
Demon's oldest method of connection, used since the very earliest days.
It has the major advantage over PAP and CHAP of easy debuggability; why
a binary login protocol ever took off, when scripted login is available,
is quite beyond me.
No, your problem is that you need, after that, to wait for `ocol:'; you
can send either a blank line, or `slip', or `ppp', or options, such as
`slip,idle=500,mru=1500' (and a CR, of course).
Then you wait for `HELLO', and you're in.
