Contents of .profile :-
PATH=...
exec vmware -fullscreen # or whatever option works ...

The exec will kill the current shell, so when they drop out of VMware,
that'll drop back to login ...

Not sure how to do it under a text-mode login, unless you do a startX
in .profile, with VMware in .xinitrc or similar ...
