As I recall, gpm is a service that is started during during bootup as a default on several of the Linux systems I have used. On the SuSE 7.0 sitting on the desk next to me, I could use the command
/sbin/init.d/gpm stop
to manually stop the service before trying startx. If that worked, then I'd try to disable gpm from loading in the runlevel you are going to use X in.
Caveat: it was ages ago that I first found this out... having a quick scan through:
man gpm
suggests that
gpm -k
will kill it off for testing purposes.
