Yes, it is, but it depends on file formats being designed and used
properly. Which is why I despair of programs like gnumeric. In this
day and age, you'd think they could design a file format that would
be parsable by file. But no, they go ahead and use plain gzipped XML,
so all file can tell you is that it was compressed with gzip. They
could have chosen a standard file-parsable header followed by a zlib
compressed XML stream. But they didn't. Sigh. See PNG for a perfect
example of how to do it properly.
