[Gllug] Partition numbering

This information is great and now that I know lilo can do this it will
help sort out my life. (Thanks Tethys and Steve) Things have moved on
a little and I'm now thinking about undoing the evil and starting again.

Which means that I really will need to renumber these partitions (well
remove partition 2 and hopefully use fdisk advanced fix feature to
move three back to two) Will this work?

Does anybody have a link to a reference paper for hard disk
partitioning? The partition table is stored in the MBR? The idea of
noting down the numbers for the partitions (cyclinder, heads etc)
deleteing them and then recreating them won't touch any of the hard
disk?

my partitions are currently numbered in order down the disk so fix (in
fdisk) won't do what I want (and I'd like to put it back later anyway)

My eventual aim is to have XP and 2000 (and linux obviously - just to
keep this on topic) all on the same laptop but with XP and 2000
knowing NOTHING about each other. Partition magic wouldn't let me
hide and NTFS partition....it's a mess at the moment I may start again
with the windows installs. Anyone point me in the direction of a how
to?

Thanks guys and sorry that so much of this is off topic!
