Doesn't the VSZ include the memory wired into your graphics card [1]
(which can't normally be used for anything else) and shared libraries?
So in my case:

USER       PID %CPU %MEM   VSZ  RSS TTY      STAT START   TIME COMMAND

/usr/bin/X11/X :0 -deferglyphs 16 -nolisten tcp vt7 -auth

... the 90476 M of memory is mostly composed of shared libaries; X owns
17984 M exclusively, but that includes 16 M on my graphics card, which
leaves about 2 M of real memory [2][3].

years ago
[2] The shared library stuff is "used" too, but it might be shared.
