If you can afford it, it ight just be quicker and easier to get a 
dedicated broadband router. These usually have firewaling built in, and
some have VPN capabilities if you need to get into (say) a Uni or 
corporate network. Others have built in wireless access points.

I know this is heresy, as such a box could easily be built using a Linux 
PC. But to be honest for the 100 to 200 UKP which dedicated routers cost I 
wonder if it si worth the effort...

I hasten to add that I don't actually own such a box.
However, I have had direct experience with Netscreens for VPN (OK, cost a 
lot more!) and I have seriously looked at the Draytek line.

The advantages I see in a small dedicated router are:

Small and quiet

you can attach several PCs in the house behind them

you can play around with/upgrade your main PC without the broadband
link being taken down (assumin your main PC has the ADSL modem card in)

Hmmm - mabe I should sell these things :-)
