I see there is now a friendly front-end to update-rc.d in the Woody
distribution. Name of rcconf. Haven't looked at it.

Harry, a very simple way to achieve this would have been

chmod -x /etc/init.d/portmap

Yes I know but since I have installed debian and it has been running
flawlessly 4 times longer than any other install I want to do things a
little less shoddy than that. I used update-rc.d and then dselect to remove
it completely. I have done quite a lot of weeding tonight on the bugger and
was Oh so very tempted to loose x completely but could not gather up the
courage as every time I am in redhat I just have to use x over ssh, I
suppose this will change when the novelty wears off.

Harry
