On investigation as suggested I found that the connection was coming up on
tap0. Having a hunt on google then told me that I was opening the ppp0
connection on the local machine and then trying to tunnel it out to my other
box via eth0. This was promptly sorted by removing the default gateway from
that box.

For anyone that is interested tap0 will be obsolete from kernel 2.5, I
think. It will use some other new fangled jobby.
