Postfix (which it sounds like you're using) has "mailq" to display the
mail queue.
And "sendmail -q" to manually send off the mail (I think this is just a
symlink to postfix).

It can be a bit tricky if you're on a dial-up because you don't want the
sendmail trying to send all the time, only when you're dialled up.
But if you've got an "always on" connection you can just run
sendmail/postfix as a daemon.
Check out /etc/postfix/main.cf (I think).
