Take a look at a combination of fetchmail and mutt. Fetchmail grabs
the mails from the remote server and stashes them on your local
system, and mutt is the mail client. Running an MTA of some sort is
also a Good Idea: exim and postfix are both popular on this list, and
I'm told that the support from the postfix list is top notch (although
I've not heard anything about the exim lists)

Links (yes, it's a different program) and w3m are also good. Both seem
to cope with tables reasonably well. If you fancy reading news groups,
take a look at slrn and tin. If you're using mutt, then slrn shouldn't
come as too much of a culture shock.

emacs (some would say vi) Most config files are in plain ascii, so
becoming familiar with a decent text editor will save you a lot of
time. Ideally, learn how to use both without too much trouble, and
then settle on the one that you prefer. If you head down the vi route,
take a good long look at vim.

If you're going to be spending a lot of time on the console, it might
be worth experimenting to try and get a higher resolution. I use the
frame buffer device, and shunt my screen mode up to something silly
--- loads of text on screen, which I prefer. Obviously, you're
becoming au fait with the man command, but take a look at apropos too.

Cheers,

Simon
