Re Hollywood mafia
It's really become a nasty business in the last few years (as ever).
Hollywood is making films that are absolute crap. They know they're
crap so they don't let critics see them until they open for the
general public.
General public gets sucked in by hype and sees the movie on the
opening weekend. Word of mouth and critical reviews kill the film and
by the next weekend.
Now let's look at how exhibitors (cinema owners) get paid. They get a
sliding scale of takings based on time since release. In the first
week, distributors take 80-90% and exhibitors get enough money to pay
for their electricity. Second week it gets better, more like 60-70%
going to the distributors. Months into the run, the exhibitor gets
decent money like 10-30% going to distributors.
Now with all these films bombing after one week, the studios still
make a profit and the exhibitor gets shafted. Nice deal if you're a
studio!
