Just adding my endorsement to an earlier mention for jEdit
http://www.jedit.org
I use it daily on Windows 2K (editing config/system files, emails, HTML, shopping lists, this posting) and also regularly on a Mac G4 OS-X as well as my home Debian (Sarge) box.
