Perhaps the configure script is not finding the relevant development files 
(headers etc). Just becuase you have X or openssl installed, it does not 
directly follow that you can compile X or ssl-enabled applications. You 
should obtain the -dev packages for X and openssl. I don't know if you use a 
distribution or not, but if you do, look for packages with names similar to 
xlibs-dev and openssl-dev and install them.

These answers (and others) should change when you install the -dev 
files/packages.
