But, being Debian, the initrd based boot is no more difficult than
installing any other package. kernel-image-* depends on the relevant
packages and reconfigures grub (probably lilo too, but I haven't used it
in an age).

Plus Debian-provided kernel packages [seem to] contain everything either
statically or as a module, so a recompile may well be unnecessary.

Not that that would stop me, mind.
