That was the problem, there wasn't an audio lead. Everything in XP 
played in realplayer so I assume there wasn't need of one.

Both problems fixed in no time,thanks all.
Back to the books and screen, now its working I'd better learn how to use it

The only times I have seen this happen are when there is no audio cable 
connecting the soundcard to the CDRom drive.  Do you have one of these?  Did 
CD's play OK in windows, if they did this might not be the problem.
