[Gllug] Alcatel speedtouch modem

I reinstalled Suse 8.1 and tried both main solutions:
1. hotplugging and speed managment driver from alcatel.
2. sourceforge drivers (modem_run etc.).
Option 1 has the modem recognised and initialised on startup. Starting pppd
just gives LCP timeouts after the "ppp0 <-> 0.38" message. I've tried
setting the mru and mtu values and modifiying other settings but that
doesn't help.
Option 2 has modem_run successfully upload the firmware to the modem and
then the ADSL line is reported as running. Starting pppd gives me the USB
bulk timeout errors. I modified the INITRD modules so that usbcore and
usb-uhci are loaded and changed /etc/fstab, but this doesn't solve the
problem either.
In both cases, the modem is initialised and the ADSL line is ready but I'm
unable to do anything more.
I either persevere for another week(!), buy an ethernet modem and card (any
recommendations?), or try mandrake. Could it possibly be something at
Tiscali's end?
