Or to put it in more detail, XML is a text format and as such is
easily and well compressed.

Gzip is fast.

Koffice actually uses the fact that it's compressing its XML (yes,
Koffice already uses XML) to put some metadata and a preview image in
the same file. (It actually uses a zip rather than gzip but I suppose
that makes little difference)
