I've got ALSA running on the stock 2.4.18 kernel as supplied with RH 8.0
I compiled from source, and everything went smoothly.
Even puts an alsasound rc script in for you, which you will want to enable
at boot time by using the services editor.
Of course, for my sound card, (ESS1887 on a poky old Dell laptop) ALSA
sounds awful, skips constantly and is generally no good whatsoever (YMMV).
It has been my experience that ALSA drivers are more susceptible to
skipping and popping due to CPU load than their OSS counterparts, but
not everyone has to put up with my chronic lack of decent hardware
