[Gllug] re: secondary MX preference levels

I am not convinced that a secondary MX is worthwhile at all.
We actually scrubbed-out the secondary MX provided by our upstream ISP for
the very reason that it does no checking for 'dodgy' sender-IP's against any
of the open-relay databases.

Any decent MTA will retry an SMTP attempt at sensible intervals anyway.
At least if you only have a primary MX there is a chance the sender may be aware
of a problem if the message finally bounces. With a secondary MX, chances are
the sender will be believe it has been succesfully delivered and it could then
sit on the secondary MX machine for days before being delivered.

I guess the strategy rather depends on the sort of internet connectivity you
have. We are directly connected, albeit by a fairly lowly kilostream circuit,
which is very reliable, so have opted for one MX only - our linux mailserver
sitting at the end of that connection.

Incidentally open-relay checking, which we do, seems only to reject a few
spams. The majority of them get through; hence I now have the world largest
pile of little blue pills :-)
