Is the master socket the only, or main, or first socket on the line, or is it
where the BT line first enters the house please?

There you've totally lost me! What does 'redo the wiring' mean please? I'm
perfecxtly capable of taking the faceplate off, but then I'm faced with lots
of tiny wires which look very delicate. Hence I leave it well alone.

'situation the modem'? Sorry, I don't understand.

When I take the faceplate off I'm left with a socket which is =exactly= the
same one as with the faceplate on. Aren't I? [Its many years since I last
removed the faceplate and looked inside, and I know that it hasn't changed
since then].
