[Gllug] How can Spam bypass SpamAssassin entirely?

Does anyone else have problems with NIS/NFS helping itself to ports used
by, for instance, spamassassin and cupsys?  I've had it happen a number
of times recently but the response I've had from maintainers is that
it's just one of those things and there's nothing you can do about it. 
Doesn't sound right to me.
