[Gllug] Courier IMAP and outlook woes

Dear all,

I'm currently using courier imap ssl, authenticated smtp, both linked to
mysql for user administration.

For linux users, this works a treat, using evolution, you can work
offline, read your mail, reply, come online and send. Retrieving mail
takes a few seconds whilst evolution checks for new headers and
downloads any. Meetings are scheduled using email and the calandar,
although there is no group calendar support that I am aware of.

For windows users (Which are a minority, but a very grumpy minority) its
not such a happy situation. Machines based in our office, generally
work well, occasionally outlook complains it can't find the server, and
gets in a flap, but thats bearable. The problem is with mobile users.

When they fire up outlook, it takes a very long time to check mail, and
I suspect its downloading every message in the inbox each time it
starts. The list of gripes are seemingly endless, but the main problems
are with offline browsing, and downloading new mail.

Is this a known problem with courier? google yields many results, but
also an equal number with cyrus et al.

Are there any setups which will provide a workable solution for outlook
users?

What have people done in the past to solve this problem? I've suggested
evolution as we are a linux company, but even the promise of ms office
(Using crossover) arent acceptible.

So far the only way I can see that will make them happy is to give them
exchange, and that would make me very unhappy.

Many thanks in advance.

David
