Could have been worse, I could have said "patches welcome" and waited
for your contribution to help fix the problem :)

If Linux isn't doing what they want then making them keep at it isn't
going to help unless they have the skills to improve things for
themselves, in fact when they go talk to their friends and bitch about
how X Y and Z suck it'll hurt.

You used the word student, if cost is an issue look at the Microsoft
Academic licensing. It's damn cheap due to the fact that they want to
try and grab as much mindshare as possible but it is cheap. If you'd
rather not give your money to MS then have a look at something like a
modern Mandrake running XPDE (http://www.xpde.com/shots.php)
