To be honest, a lot of academic institutions are pushing industrial 
collaboration these days, as a result of something called 'full economic 
costing' that effectively reduces the amount of money available from the 
usual charitable/government funding agencies, which comes into force 
next month. Industry are consequently being courted in a big way as a 
way of getting more cash.

If I hadn't deleted the original post, I'd see what his publication 
record's like - that might be a better indicator.

The downside to that being the tendency of industrial collaborators to 
make you sign NDAs and then drag their feet when it comes to publication 
if the results don't match commercial expectations.

Sorry, getting OT but it's a personal bugbear...
