now I see what I was missing !

mount -t cifs -o username=seanb%******* //HIKER/web /mnt/intranet/

an hooray I can work on our website again :-)


still, having started on the whole active directory thing I'd quite like 
to know why this happens

wbinfo -t
checking the trust secret via RPC calls failed
error code was NT_STATUS_INTERNAL_ERROR (0xc00000e5)
Could not check secret

maybe I'll add the samba docs to my reading list ...
