Unfortunately were not allowed to install anything onto these machines
(infact it's the console of ESX server) so Amanda and the like are out, I
have a pretty good idea how to bash script it just wanted to avoid re
inventing the wheel if someone somewhere had already don't it.

You can tunnel virtually any type of connection over ssh. I've never 
tried it myself but I imagine you could persuade AMANDA to work via an 
ssh tunnel.
