No you don't. By the sound of it, you have a requirement to edit
documents from potentially remote locations. Using a browser at
any point in this is almost certainly the wrong solution to the
problem (apart from maybe being used to gain an exclusive lock
on the document before editing it).

You don't mention anything about the clients. Do you have control
over them? What's the bandwidth between them and where the documents
are held? Do you expect editing of documents to be possible from
an internet cafe, for example? By field engineers over a slow GPRS
link? The correct solution for your problem will depend on your
answers to these (and other) questions.

Lossless conversion between word and other formats is pretty much
impossible with current tools, so unless you're prepared to accept
formatting changes, don't even consider it. If all you care about
is content, then this may be an option. But if you only cared about
content, you'd probably be using a more sane format than word to
start with...
