[Gllug] How to manage scratched DVDs

Hello everyone

Sometimes when I watch a DVD on my laptop (using mplayer), a combination
of a scratched DVD and an old / intolerant DVD drive means that the
whole thing stops working. What I can't figure out is how to kill
mplayer, eject the DVD, and stop the stream of "sense error" messages.

The drive uses the ide-cd. Is there maybe a way to tell that to give up
and reset?
