Then and now I do most of my everyday programming works using Perl but
that (for several reasons) is hardly what I would recommend anyone to
start with. Overally, I also guess that Python is a good "first"
language, being more strict in its concepts than most of the other
"scripting" languages but not as hard as Java to get along with if
you're new to programming.

Btw: Thoughts on Ruby, anyone around here? I know some colleagues of
mine to be pretty enthusiastic about that language, but still didn't had
time to check it out...
