Re DVD drives:-

I am using an NEC3500 and am very happy with it
Believe it has been supserseded by the 3510/3250?

It works well writing DVDs under DOS and CDs under Linux (not tried DVDs
under Linux).  Also writes dual-layer DVDs - though probably no great advantage
at present bearing the extortionate cost of the blank discs!

If you plan to read Film DVDs with it you probably also need to download the
flash update from the dangerous brothers website, which removes the rip-lock
in the firmware.
