Earlier this month Peter Childs started a thread about burning CDs under
debian with a 2.6 kernel using an ATAPI drive at /dev/hdc.

I have just being trying to burn a CD for the first time in a long while
(distros seem to need dvds these days) and discovered that my old
cdrecord scripts no longer work.

Using Debian cdrecord 2.1.01a03-5 :-

cdrecord -scanbus behaved exactly as described in one of Peter's messages
returning an invalid scsibus, target and lun of -1 -1 -1 and a load of
errors trying to open /dev/hda.

The solution is to ignore the instructions for specifying the device in
/usr/share/doc/cdrecord/README.ATAPI.setup and just use /dev/hdc. I.e
  cdrecord -v dev=/dev/hdc cdimage
