Taking the obvious assumption that you don't consider recorded TV
programs to be "valuable data", the only likely reasons to want USB are
for a USB remote control (but most are serial) or a USB capture device
(so don't buy one).

For a capture card, I'd recommend this one:

which is cheap and so far 100% reliable using kernel 2.6.14.5 and the
latest Linux TV drivers.

You'll fill up 40G pretty quickly - about 30 hours of TV.  OTOH, fitting
a larger drive is trivial.

The documentation for setting up MythTV is pretty poor but the actual
process isn't as bad as it seems, especially once you've done it once.
