A bit more reading up on the tape command reveals that it can toggle compression
on the drive  :-)

Never really looked into it before as I have always been a bit mistrustful of
hardware compression!  If indeed the drives compresses the whole stream rather
than block by block that would seem to be rather risky!!

Fortunately my tape archives are relatively small, so its simple enough to fit
everything on one tape anyway.
