There are 2 different classes of systems: pre-N and draft-N. Pre-N makes 
no claim to be forwards compatible, whereas draft-N does, but has much 
worse performance according to reviews I've read.

I've changed my mind and I think I will go for a router which claims 
extended range. Manufacturers claim that these routers will still have 
better range even in mixed-mode networks and despite the curious lack of 
reviews of systems in mixed mode, those I can find are mildly positive. 
I don't particularly fancy my chances with the soldering iron.

There does not seem to be any consensus as to one make being more 
reliable than others that I can find. The situation is completely 
muddied by the fact that the rate at which the companies are changing 
both chipsets and firmware is so fast it makes comparison very difficult.
