[Gllug] PNGs

Anybody here a graphics expert?

I have written some perl to reduce PNGs using adaptive filtering and it
works brilliantly on the test suite images (see Image::Pngslimmer in
CPAN or http://png.transpero.net)

But in the real world it gives lousy results - filtering often seems to
make images bigger.

Is that to be expected? I am intending to use this with photographs
because although lossy JPEGs are better for that, all of this came out
of a J2ME project and most mobiles only display PNGs.

Should I just not bother trying to filter the photos because they are
unlikely to have the characteristics that work well with filtering (ie
slowly changing colours)
