I have it working reasonably happily. I'm using Enlightenment as a
desktop, with minimal GNOME stuff running, but I do run
gnome-volume-manager from my .xsession. Plugging in a new device causes
udev to see it, and send an event to hald, which creates the appropriate
entries under /media. Mounting is all done automagically with pmount,
but as gnome-volume-manager is running, when a memory card or similar is
plugged in, it gets automounted and a Nautilus window pops up on my
desktop. I had to configure Nautilus to not try and take over the
desktop, but it works fairly well for me, giving me much of the
convenience of GNOME without actually having to use the whole GNOME
desktop, which I find a painful experience. It all relies on
pmount/pumount though, as it doesn't create /etc/fstab entries.
HTH,
Mike
