We use Specialix RIO on SCO OPenserver (drivers also available for Linux)
and they are excellent  - they even offer lifetime warranty on the stuff!

I think other specialix multiport devices will also work on Linux.

RIO is not cheap  - not really suitable for home use,  but it does support
huge numbers of ttys with very little cpu load as far as I can tell  (the
little boxes all have transputers in them).
