If it's a problem with footwell space, why not a virtal machine on an
existing box providing the required distribution installation?

Do your customers (!) really want a different distribution or just a
different desktop environment.  If the latter then you should be able to
provide all they want by installing two desktops one one distribution and
they can choose at logon time which to run.
