[Gllug] Reserving pagecache memory?

Are  the settings for overcommit_memory and overcommit_ratio useful in
this situation?
Would be worth giving them a tweak and seeing if that helps.


BTW, the lack of any floor in the cache in Linux is what results in
you being unable to log into very busy systems - ie. the memory is all
used up, and yous shell process cannot get into memory,  it is not
that the system is too busy to read from disk as is often thought.
(IRIX did have a floor on the cache, but I don't see you getting your
Origins back out of the dumpster).

BTW, best of luck in searching for a junior sysadmin at MPC. When the
lucky person gets the job (no sarcasm intended) after a few months
send them along to give a talk to GLLUG!
