My impression has always been that the QWERTY keyboard design was largely
a function of the 'basket' containing the type-hammers; ie the left most keys
on the keyboard correspond to the leftmost type-hammers in the basket,
and
the type-basket was designed so that letters that were frequently typed next
to each other would not be next to each other in the type basket and thus
clout each other or stick when typing quickly.

Of course I could have gotten it totally wrong .....
